All products are meticulously handcrafted in a home workshop in Stavanger, Norway

What is my product made out of?

All products are made out of Jesmonite.

What is Jesmonite?

Jesmonite is a versatile, eco-friendly composite material used in crafts and construction. It consists of a gypsum-based material mixed with an acrylic resin, resulting in a durable, lightweight, and adaptable substance. Known for its versatility, Jesmonite can be cast into various shapes and textures, making it ideal for creating intricate and unique home decor items. Additionally, it's non-toxic and has a low environmental impact.

Is Jesmonite waterproof?

Jesmonite is a porous material that needs to be sealed with a top coat sealer in order to achieve a waterproof surface. Most products available at Nook Decor Studio are sealed with an acrylic sealer. Products that are not are marked as not sealed on their product description page.

Is Jesmonite food safe?

All Jesmonite products are water-based, non-solvent and contain no VOCs. However, it's important to note that Jesmonite is not certified as food-safe. We strongly discourage its use for direct contact with food or beverages. Instead, we advise using Jesmonite items strictly for decorative purposes. This is to ensure the longevity and safety of both your Jesmonite pieces and your food, as using them for food-related applications can pose potential risks.

Is Jesmonite heat safe?

Jesmonite is moderately heat-resistant, making it suitable for many decorative applications. It is recommended to seal all Jesmonite products to reduce their porosity. However, the Jesmonite brand has yet to create and recommend a burn-proof sealer. Jesmonite products are not suitable for use in situations involving direct or prolonged exposure to high temperatures, such as trivets or surfaces directly exposed to hot cookware. While they can withstand everyday temperature fluctuations, excessive heat may cause damage or discoloration. For best results, it is advisable to use Jesmonite products primarily for decorative purposes and keep them away from direct heat sources.

Can I use Jesmonite products for burning candles?

Yes, you can use Jesmonite products to burn candles. However, please be aware that placing candles directly on the Jesmonite surface is not recommended. Jesmonite is durable but can be affected by high temperatures, especially with direct contact with heat from a burning wick, potentially causing slight damage or discolouration. Use a heat-resistant barrier like a glass or metal holder between the candle and the Jesmonite surface to prevent this. It is perfectly fine to use it with burning tealights, candles in glass jars also with regular cube candles, as long as they will not be burned entirely and the heat from it will not directly contact the surface. This precaution ensures the safety and longevity of your Jesmonite piece while enjoying your candle decor.cor.

Is Jesmonite dishwasher and microwave safe?

Jesmonite is not suitable for use in dishwashers or microwaves. This material cannot withstand the high temperatures and moisture levels found in these appliances.

Are air bubbles a defect?

Air bubbles naturally occur in handmade Jesmonite products and are not considered defects. These minor imperfections add to each piece's unique charm and character, highlighting our products' artisanal nature. While we strive for the highest quality and smooth finishes, air bubbles reflect the handcrafted process and ensure that every item is unique.

How should I care for my Jesmonite pieces?

To keep your Jesmonite decor pieces looking their best, follow these care instructions:

  • Cleaning: Wipe your Jesmonite items with a soft, damp cloth. For more stubborn dirt, use mild soap and water. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads, which can scratch the surface.
  • Handling: Jesmonite is durable but can chip or crack if dropped or handled roughly. Always handle your pieces with care to avoid damage.
  • Placement: Keep your Jesmonite items away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause discolouration, and high heat can damage the material.
  • Moisture: While Jesmonite is water-resistant, it's best to avoid prolonged exposure to moisture. If the pieces are wet, dry them thoroughly and avoid submerging them in water for extended periods of time.

By diligently adhering to these guidelines, your Jesmonite decor will not only retain its original beauty but also stay in good condition, ensuring your investment lasts for years to come.
